The M3 and iX models were always super expensive. An M3 was $35,000 in the late '80s. That's close to $60,000 in 2008 dollars.

Even a 318is is expensive by today's standards. My dad bought mine brand new in '91 for about $22,000. Adjusted for inflation, that would be around $34,000 ... which is pretty much what a 135i costs today. And a brand new 128i is 5 grand cheaper than a brand new E30 318is.

Although I miss the simplicity, light weight, and tossable feel of the E30, we definitely get more for our money these days.

As much as we love the M3 these days, they were VERY slow sellers at the time. I remember people were shocked that the "top of the line" 3-series "only" had a 4-cylinder engine. They languished on dealer lots for years. In fact, the M3 was such a slow seller that BMW NA never planned to sell the E36 M3 in the USA.

When my dad bought my 318is in '91, there was a slightly used M3 for sale at the same time. It was selling for about the same price as the 318is (low $20K range). My dad test drove it and hated it: he found it loud, rough, and lacking in torque. He also hated the flared fenders and (especially) the rear wing.

He just didn't "get" the M3. He couldn't appreciate the difference between the 318is and the M3...so he went with the brand new 318 over the used M3. I was kicking and screaming, but no one listened to me :(

There are a bunch of inflation calculators online. They're more or less accurate depending on a bunch of variables. But $25K in '87 would be around $47K in 2008 dollars.

To put things in perspective, I still have the window sticker for my 1988 Mercedes-Benz 560SL roadster. The 560SL was the top-of-the-line Benz at the time. It was $64,230 when new. Adjusted for inflation, that's around $115,000 today. Hard to believe these things were so expensive at the time!

So lets see, the first Japanese car to hit $10K was the '81 Prelude.

According to http://data.bls.gov/cgi-bin/cpicalc.pl, that would be about $24K today.

                    Sounds about right.
