Problem is, a torn meniscus = cartilage damage. And cartilage usually doesn't just "heal" the same way other tissues do. The biggest reason for this is due to the cartilage's function wherever it is, in your case between your femur and tibia, its job is to keep the two bones from grinding against each other. Having torn the lateral meniscus, you now have a weak spot in that padding. Chances are, sooner or later, you will need to get surgery on it.
It's interesting to note that only the lateral meniscus was torn. Usually, when a knee injury occurs that is sufficient enough to tear the lateral meniscus would do some damage to the LCL or MCL as well. Again, an injury to the LCL or MCL won't just "heal" on its own in most cases.
Does this mean rush into surgery? No, it doesnt. A torn meniscus is actually a pretty common knee injury. However because you are an active runner, I wouldn't put surgery off the table.
Sorry to hear about your knee. Stop riding bikes down stairs, I guess :DMy mountains are better than yours.

no thats the gooch, other names are midway, etc, etc....
Anyways.... I feel the least pain when im running, so I dont know if that means its ok.... Probably not though. Luckily, if its a small tear on the outside, the outside is semi vascular, which would kick ass if it healed on its own. Ive hurt this area before when skiiing (360 Iron Cross off a 12 foot jump). It seemed to hurt then just went away. I initially thought it was my IT band, which is still possible. We will see.

Yeah, its a negative on the torn meniscus. They did the test after practice yesterday, and my meniscus def. isnt torn. My knee is kinda sore, so ill be running on the grass.
Our training room is kickass, weve got a resistance swimming machine called a swim-ex, The Browns, Bengals, cincy reds and us are the only ones in Ohio that have one.
