This weeks' e30 puzzler (hybrid engine jigsaw puzzle)

you have an eta & a 325i... challenge is... make a good 2.7i & end up w/a running "detuned 325i" donor car

    is it possible?

2.7i would basically be the 325i engine w/ the eta crank, eta rods & some sort of piston choice w/ the 325i wiring harness, 325i ecu & 325i breathing (intake & exhaust systems)

leftover parts for the donor car - 325i shortblock, 325i rods, eta head, eta pistons, eta wiring harness, eta ECU, eta breathing

yeah... wouldn't be fun to drive... but is it possible?
(this isnt my question, but a fellow bimmer dude that's hoping do to the 2.7i w/ his ETA)

I could see that being possible, but you'd need a couple extra parts.
As far as I know, after you do the 2.7i swap, Some of the parts you
swap into the 2.7i you wouldn't be able to swap back from the eta....
    Make sense?

like?... you begin w/ two running engines, the trick is to END w/ two running engines, one of which being a 2.7L 325i engine

little confused, you want to make a 2.7i and still have the 325i donor running? If so sure you could do that, like kidrobot said you would need some extra parts but why have a detuned i?

            Okay lemme try again.

Some of the i engine parts are parts specific.
What would happen is after doing the 2.7i swap,
you'd take a couple parts that you wouldn't be able
            to replace with eta parts.

Did I make more sense this time Oreo?

            2.5L e huh...
wow that would run like super crappy.....
I bet it would get pretty good mileage though.

well for one thing eta pistons on I rods won't work. The eta piston will end up about 1mm over the deck of the 325i block with the 325i crank. I have almost eta pistons in my garage, 5 325i 11 eta, and 6 3234i pistons plus 1 M50 machined piston to fit the m20 block. If you take both an I pistons and an eta pistons and connect both of them together with the same wrist pin the eta piston extends 1mm above the deck of the 325i piston. so when either piston is stuck onto the same rod the eta piston will always be 1mm higher. This height is just to the main surface of the piston and not to the crown(or heighest point). The cheapest way for your friend to be left with a running eta engien and a running 2.7 engine is to buy an extra m10 short block and stick onto it the eta head and wiring and all. Or use that block to stick the 325i head onto.

I hope you meant M20 and not M10.
