So I pull up to a subway today to get something to eat and this total stranger comes up to me asking me if he could borrow some money b/c he is low on gas and he left home (about a hundred miles away) without a his wallet?

I used to toss a couple buck out until one time I offered to actually buy what he said he was going to buy (a fast food burger) and the guy told me 'no thanks'

Don't give him any money! I ran into this seemed to be religious guy telling me his car broke down and he needed some money to send his wife and daughter home, seemed like an ok guy. Few weeks later, a friend of mine told me he ran into some guy that was asking for money. I asked him if he had a cross on a necklace and the broke down car scenario and he said that was him... People taking adavntage.

what I would do? say, "oh that sucks, sorry - I don't have any money right now"

happens all the time - NEVER fall for it.

After an incubus concert in Worcester MA in May 2002, me, Brew and another friend had just gotten back into Brew's 325e when some (presumably homeless) guy came to window, crying about how he had 4 kids to feed and the kids' mother was in jail and he was probably headed in that direction soon too... oh well, too bad - not my problem.
We had just gotten out of $30+ concert where I spent another $35 on 2 t-shirts and $5 on snacks and drinks after. I really didn't have any money left, but I wouldn't have given that bum a single cent anyways.
Occasionally I see guys playing drums on barrels and trash can covers, actually making music and unique rhythms. These guys are putting effort into being noticed and not simply "begging" for $$$. I gave a couple guys in Washington D.C. $20 once because they were kick-ass percussionists, and I play the drums so I appreciated their skill and effort. I can't justify giving by hard earned dough to complete strangers who do nothing more than beg and cry for pity. Don't fall for that bullshit. 95% of people are scamming you.

I NEVER give money to beggers but when i see a cool bum doing some sort of skill (washing windows isnt a skill) ill give em somthing. Like in santabarbara where they do cool stuff. Once i saw this guy who would hide in the bushes in FULL camo gear and jump out and scare the shit out of people, then just hold out his hand. It was fucking great.

I never give those lazy mofos money. Don't be shocked to come back a day after and they are there with the same story. If you really think they have no bad intent, simply ask the people around there if they know the guy, when they say he does it everyday...

Here in SB we have the most creative bums... they put little signs on the sand and you try and throw change into these jars or whatever, some are creative, like most have an 8'x8' blanket to catch the change that doesn't make it, well one guy has one that says "mines not as big as the other guys, but that makes it more interesting!"

                          "Why lie? need beer."

one guy makes sand castles, of detailed stuff like mermaids that are 10' in length, pretty impressive.

I think we've all been burned by the dishonest begger at one point or another. Its happened to me. I saw some guy by a gas station (one I usually don't frequent).....said he needed some money to eat. I caved and gave the guy a couple bucks. About a month later I saw the same shmuck out there pullin the same routine. I ignored him the second time.

It truly is a shame there are these dishonest people in society cause there are others out there who are genuinely suffering. They're hungry, or sick, or homeless, or all the above. The street beggers don't get my business anymore....not since I started to notice the falacy of these people. If I want to help out the needy, I gladly donate some old clothes or other items to the Salvation Army or Good Will. Just yesterday while strolling through the mall during my lunch hour I saw (and heard) one of those bell ringers from the Salvation Army. I dropped 'em $3.

i don't even wanna SAY how much i gave those two guys in the incident i posted about up top... aw fuck, i will... it was like 20 somethin bucks... what can i say? they fuckin got me... showed me their licenses (knowing i wouldn't remember the names) blah blah blah... alot of details about themselves, where they lived, where their car was.... they did a good job making the story seem true... turns out the two guys were laid off from the building i was working at & every once in a while show up & scam some new employee... well i guess i was that one.. & i sure as fuck hope they come back & bump into me again

now the cammo guy & the towel guys....

and now for some quotes to make me look smarter than i look now

We tell lies when we are afraid... afraid of what we don't know, afraid of what others will think, afraid of what will be found out about us. But every time we tell a lie, the thing that we fear grows stronger. ~Tad Williams

Pretty much all the honest truth telling in the world is done by children. ~Oliver Wendell

If falsehood, like truth, had but one face, we would be more on equal terms. For we would consider the contrary of what the liar said to be certain. But the opposite of truth has a hundred thousand faces and an infinite field. ~Michel Eyquem de Montaigne

Honesty pays, but it don't seem to pay enough to suit some people. ~Frank McKinney "Kin" Hubbard

I am different from Washington; I have a higher, grander standard of principle. Washington could not lie. I can lie, but I won't. ~Mark Twain

It takes two to lie. One to lie and one to listen. ~"Homer Simpson," from the television show The Simpsons ;)
