haha, I'm actually having the exact problem with my e36! I broke the ignition so it's free spinning. luckily I can just remove the lock cylinder without changing out the steering lock. Is your friend's free spinning or locked up?

the shaft that goes between the lock cyl and the switch is broken, and the lock cyl is fucked up so I can't seem to get it out.

I may not be doing it right, how the hell is it supposed to come out.

Do you just put the key in, turn to the on position then slide a straightened out paper clip into that little hole by the key and then pull it out?

No, best to use a bobby pin. Turn teh key to the almost on position, like second click. Then you feel the boby pin get spring loaded and you have to bend it upwards, releasing some latch. It's a total bitch, and granted I'm a noob and had never done it before but it took me at least 30 minutes and lots of frustration. There is a youtube video with some super douchebaggy guy that is actually really helpful.

Start whining when your ignition switch is $300 and all the rest of that shit is NLA.

hopefully the only reason i ever own an E36 is to take the motor out, and as far as the E30, well lets just say i have more parts than i know what to do with

e39s have the same problems. I have done a few at work since it started to get cold.

its a crappy job-- but really not that difficult.
