New M5 With A Regular Manual....

Saw this on Vortex, wonder if it is true or not. Apparently the new M5 will in fact have a standard as an option. They say it won't be available at release, but that it will have one.

Yeah that is official. At least for the US they intend to offer a manual, in Europe where the SMG sells better they will probably stick with that.

Id rather have the SMG in an M5.

I'll have to agree. That motor doesn't exactly have a massive torque band, so you're gonna be shifting a lot. I'm sure they're also going to be going with a 6 speed box as opposed to the 7 speed in the SMG. If you look at the gears on that box, they're all over the place in the transmission to save space & add strength. The pattern would be all over the box, as opposed to the traditional "H" pattern.

On a semi related note, I drove a new X3 3.0 with the 6 speed and thought "man, this would be a pain in the ass in traffic". There's too many gears for a motor that doesn't need it.

Although a manual gearbox will be offered with the new M5, I'm willing to bet that the majority sold in the US will have the SMG box installed. Look at the sale figures for the E46 M3 when comparing units sold with the 6 speed manual versus the SMG box. The latter is a very popular choice over here. When the E39 M5 rolled out, there were probably many upset potential buyers who wanted one but found out is was offered with just a manual. Probably why there's so many 540ia with the sport package running around.

I do think that v10 will feel massively torquey to most of us... :P

Lots of shifting or not, I would much rather have a manual transmission any day. Yes, I have driven an SMG, just didn't care for it too much.

My dream car is an M3 CSL with a 6-speed manual.

Maybe it's just me, but I'd rather have a new tranny made for the power of the new V10 as well as perfect gearing. Rather than an older 6 speed, with possible issues with power delivery.

for some reason, i tend to doubt they would sell a tranny that can't hold the power. at least i would hope so.
