A little OT but I just found a very interesting read/write-up on the m70

http://bmwe32.masscom.net/ < click on "Engine" and then "engine rebuild m70"

not really a true rebuild, but a very nice refresh with lots of great pix

dude put the v12 (and a 4hp22!) in a kit Cobra, pretty cool imo

maybe thats a bad pic or i'm missing something but i think it looks like a hottank treatment and some sandblasting , and maybe a new bore and that motor would be ready to go, am i missing something or just not seeing the extent of the damage????

I have a friend in western Mass that is trying to get rid of his. Yea it's the one with 265K on it. He's a Tec and everything works except for the alternator. He replaced it with a 528i touring and was using it for winter driver, When the alt quit he just lost interest with the 528i being the new ride.

PPm me if there is any interest.

    Engine quit

    Transmission quit

very good advice napa! the 02 was the first DD turned hot rod . the 318i is slowly going the same route....luckily i have a jeep as a DD...but even that is making me want to "Hot" it up a bit...

and indeed that is the other fear that the m70 has a cracked head or someting i cant see that would cost 1000$ plus hella head aches to figure out and fix...

ill be back at the j yard in the am and see if its still there ....now that i know a bit more about it

    and harv that pic of the broken drive shaft gives me evil grins!!!!! ;}

The M70 is an embarrassment to the 5.0 fox bodies. it's actually got less power per liter than the M20, and it's still got 75 more horsepower than the 5.0 V8. It's the perfect swap for making fun of stock fox bodies at the strip.

i would love to stuff an m70 in an e30, just for the wow factor and the chanllege. Problem is finding a 5 or 6 speed for it. The twined one above has an auto afaik. 8 series with v12's had 6 speeds but not all of them. The trans are rare...

i love i.c.e.s but no wonder they are on the way out..
More like 33% to the flywheel. Auto diesels are better (closer to 40% on a good day), Crazy CR engines are better (like NG waukesha/dresser engines with 14:1 CR and the miller cycle), and so on. Our 1950s tractor with a 6.5:1 CR, I don't even want to think about doing the math.

Stationary / (monstrous) boat diesels can clear 50% efficiency, and they usually do exhaust heat energy recovery as well.

Now you know why CHP is such a wonderful thing. Turning your diesel generator into a generator + plant heater is so "green."
40% goes into power, 60% heat, and if you can put back half of that heat into heating your building, you're now at 70% efficiency.
Well designed systems often hit 85% overall efficiency.

but in all seriousness it looks like a m70 the V12 that was in the 1994-2001 740's or w/e
