Yea, I've seen an e36 with a S42 race at Laguna Seca duing the old north american touring car - or what ever the name of it was way back then. The sound wasn't very impressive. It sounded like a dishwasher jacking off.

The motor is very small. There was a good foot of nothing around all 4 side of the motor on the e36 I saw.
