is your engine still in the car? if you can get the car on a hoist or high enough outside use a water blaster. if the engine is still in, cover it with about 3 tarps so you dont get water on it (not that it matters on things like the intake/valve cover etc, but you shouldnt get the electrical stuff wet, nor the podfilter if applicable). Wouldnt bother battling doing the engine bay if the engine is still in if it was me..
PURPLE POWER by coastal IS the same as castrol's purple degreaser. COASTAL makes it FOR castrol. it is usually about 1/2 the price of the castrol stuff.
power washer and purple power are your best NON DESTRUCTIVE degreaser, just don't dilute it and spray it on right out of the bottle.

if you want brake cleaner, CRC industries makes the best stuff. I'd been using their industrial degreaser since my friends can get it free from the refineries. Turns out the shit was $20 a can! I've gone through a couple cases not knowing I had used a few hundred bucks in degreaser. It melts grease like butter though.
Fortunately they sell a similar product that costs about $5 a can at regular autoparts stores. It's probably 75% as good, but it's about the best you can get that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

Spray, scrub, rinse: be amazed.

Gunk brand engine degreaser has always been what I use when I need some strong shit. Purple Power/ Super clean work good for light stuff, but when it's caked on, nothing beats Gunk.
Didn't think to do that.
I'll make a spray tomorrow, before and after shot.
Everybody needs a large quantity of this. It even takes off that baked on shit like nothing.
shit i just did this the other day. well to the front part of my engine. it was caked like half inch thick. i used a can of gunk degreaser and a small vinyl brush. took me a few hours but its a lot cleaner looking now than before. the engine bay is still dusty as hell though.
