Don't listen to the BS about the M42 being slow as shit, getting worse gas mileage than an eta, etc... and to correct some HP numbers listed above, the M20B25 is rated at 168, and the M42 has ALOT more than 5 hp more than the M20B27. M42 has 134, B27 has 122. That's 12 hp.

yeah, the M42 car isn't brutally fast, but neither is an M20B25 car. A lightened 318is can get very peppy, A few of my friends that have ridden in my car have said that they were surprised at how hard my M42 pulls. Sure, an M20B25 may beat it in a straight drag, but I don't think it would be by much.

My 318is gets 30 mpg average, and that is me driving like an asshat. That is by no means worse mileage than an eta. and daily driveability of a 318is is as good as I can ask for. I would rather DD my car that is nimble and tossable all day long rather than my wife's E39 for example, or my in-law's E34, or any of my E28s, etc etc.

Another few things about M42: better hp/liter than M20B25, dual overhead cams, timing CHAIN, 4 valves/cyl, WAY easier to work on, way more room in the engine bay, lighter, etc etc

If you want to talk to some people who really respect the M42, go to M42club.com.

That said, I am planning to ditch my M42 for an S50, eventually, because it is true, I can't bake tires in the first four gears and I can't leave corvettes behind with my M42, but it has been dead reliable and served me well at autocrosses, a track day, and DD every day w/ 220k on the clock.

and here is a few pics of my 318is:

Well... I'm happy to tell you guys that I've become terribly ill again - yup, you guessed it. I have the fever.

I just want to buy E30s all day! Wtf is wrong with me?! I found a 91 318is in Sacramento for cheap... besides having some fucking nasty paint, it looks as solid as any car on the internet can look. I want it fuuuuuuck. :(

A few of my friends went driving with me yesterday (one guy and his wife rode with me in the 318 and the other guy followed on his crotch rocket) We went and hit some back-road twisties (I guess its called the Devil's Triangle) The guy on the bike was frustrated because he had trouble keeping up with me. I never went very fast, but I was able to take the turns so well that I kept good momentum through all of it. The 318is is very toss-able and enjoyable without having to be very powerful. Mines just a good running stock motor with a good condition stock suspension. While the ETA is probably better on gas, I find the 318 a lot more fun. Also, maintaining the M42 is pretty easy. Get a good 318i or is... fix the mess under the intake, maybe get a mark d chip and enjoy!

I spy the corner of a familiar car :)
We need to do it again sometime soon.

e30 m3 > 318is. Everyone that owns a 318is is too broke to get a e30m3. including myself. So stop with all this nonsense. lol.

I was 16 when I had mine, and I stripped the interior out completely besides the two front sport seats, and all the tar in the car, had no A/C or P/S. Car also did not have abs it was an 84 325e. I miss that car a lot. Mainly because it had a damn LSD, while my 325i has an open diff.
