    Renault Dauphine

    Flamesuit on...

These are Incredibly slow, awkward looking mini 4 door cars.

My grandpa has a miniature buggy that hes kept in his back yard under a overhang for years, and it hasnt run for years. The buggy has a Renault Dauphine motor. He has no interest in getting the buggy to run (well, hed rather work on my uncle's vw powered dune buggy), which got me thinking. The motor, according to the previous owners records, has a fresh rebuild and cylinder kit, and it was only ran for a short period of time before going into storage. My idea(s) were to

    A) restore the motor with a new rebuild kit (ive already contacted Jacques Renault parts, prices are reasonable) and restore the possibly slow (but nimble) buggy

    B) restore the motor and very slowly restore (with grandpa) this Renault Dauphine

    C) work on vw dune buggy and dont even do anything with the renaults.

    Opinions?

Only French car that I would ever consider owning would be an Renault R5 Turbo. All the rest are too bizarre.

My father had a Dauphine Spyder back in the '60s. He liked it & said it handled well. Coming from a '56 Ford I suppose anything would. One strange thing--he always kept his cars clean & would wash it constantly. Trouble was, the distributor was just inside the rear grill and any water that would splash in there would keep it from firing for 45 minutes after every cleaning.

Brake harder. Go faster. No shit.

When I lived in europe in the 80s, my parents had a Renault 10 and my grandfather had a Renault 8. These are the 1960s descendants of the Dauphine. I distinctly remember the 1100cc rear engine bay and the noise and heat it produced in the rear seat. Very cool to hear they still exist in the US.

I bet every fan of that car wants a Pug because "its so ugly its cute!"

                  Fucking vomitorious, man.

Dump all of that shit in a metal shredder IMO. If you are gonna do a "restore" do something worth remembering. If it has to be ugly, do a Karmann Ghia!

As previously mentioned, I know its ugly, but its just an idea ive had and contemplating doing. One other thing to consider that my grandpa brought up was to do a bmw touring bike motor swap, or any touring bike motor that is shaft driven. I hear honda has one with a tranny that has reverse. With one of these motors it would be much faster, and with its light weight it would get along fine.

Im thinking the restore is not worth it unless we used a motor cycle motor because otherwise 0-60 would be 32 seconds (not even lying).
