crap! how long can i ride on a bad clutch bearing?

its not extremely loud now but it does sound a little crunchy. is this like a wheel bearing where you can ride on it for a while or have these been known to explode? sucks cause the clutch feels great. thanks for any input.

I've been doing it for the last two years. Even got a new clutch and kept the bearing..

    *cough cough*

    I won't name any names though. :)

Is it the Pilot bearing or throw out bearing?

What does it sound/feel like? I've never felt one, but I think my clutch pedal has been feeling a little "gritty" lately. Same problem?

its the release bearing. sounds like quick on/off crunchy noise. chunka chunka chunk......chunk chunka chunk....etc. goes away when i push in the clutch. you can feel it in the floor but very little. good to know its not that big a deal. ill replace it soon but i need the car to last 2 more months at least.

Since I bought my car it made a very quiet grinding noise when I depressed the clutch pedal. After about a year the noise started to strengthen. For about two weeks it was getting louder, and then it started making unbearable squeaking noises. That's when I replaced the throwout bearing. I even took my clutch to a local shop that does rebuilding, but they said that it was almost like new. So I put it back happily and I am really, really satisfied with the bearing replacement, now you can't even tell if the clutch is depressed or not just from listening to the noises! Awesome!

the sound you are hearing i believe is just the getrag reminding you that its there.

does it go away when you push the clutch to the floor?

If it goes away when you press the clutch pedal it isn't the throwout bearing. The symptoms of a bad TO bearing are grinding/noise when you press the pedal.

You are describing ''getrag growl'' it is play in the input layshaft bearings it doesn't mean your transmission is going to blow up either. A fluid change with Redline MTL may help alot.

^^^What he said. If the noise goes away when you press in the clutch, it's not the throw out bearing.

For the record you do not want to drive around for a while with bad wheel bearings.

So what the hell do you replace when the car makes the noise when the clutch ISN'T depressed? When I push it in there is no noise, but when I let it out it gets a little rattly.
