stupid question time.... dog-leg tranny

i've heard people talk about a rare euro dogleg tranny... i had no idea what it was... but when I got my 928, i noticed that the shift pattern is way different than other german cars. Does dogleg refer to the shift pattern?

Whats the advantage to having that shift pattern? For the track I might see an advantage because you very rarely use 1st gear. But normal daily driving I dont see too much of an advantage to it.

well quick shifts from R to 1st... thats about it as far as i see.

The point is for use on the track.
Also IIRC the dog-leg box is also close ratio meaning that 5th gear is 1:1 instead of over drive and the cars that came with them have a taller final gear ratio.

1st is only used in the pits and R is used if you fuck up. 2,3,4,5 are used more often, so keeping them in the H pattern means more efficient shifting.

I agree with e30sd. If your car is moving, you shouldn't really have to shift into 1st. In city driving, I use 2nd and 3rd the most which are right in line with each other.

that's exactly why.. and secondly you rarely get this trans and have it not be a close ratio box. with the closer ratios, first gear is semi to completely useless, so this makes the adjusted gear pattern that much more necessary
