    Looking into a 535iS...

    Hey guys-
I sold my 325E today, and I am looking for my next project... I am thinking bigger, faster, smoother... and I thought, why not a 535iS! I have a set of 18" E39 M5 wheels comming my way pretty soon here, so they would be perfect for it...
I found one in my price-range...
what do you guys think? worth it as a daily driver/hwy cruiser for my 1000 mile round trip visits home?

post your thoughts, even though they are on an E28....

I say go for it. A kid who lives a couple streets away from me has a black E28 535is in great condition. It's a really nice car. It'll be certainly be more comfortable on long trips than an E30, and much more fun than a 325e when passing on the highway.

My younger brother has one. Very comfortable car. It's a 1988 535is ex. scaa track car. came with a gutted interior...well everythign was included so my dad re-installed it for him.. My dad is bmw cca pocono mtn chap president so he bought that car from a close freind of his. man is it decked out..almost M5 ish power..254 hp, brake cooling ducts striaght to the 95' 840i brakes. Iove the ducts and the l"arge bus sound squeaking" brakes. Stops on a dime.
My bro just added a zender body kit, euro lights and grilles, rear sunshade, 2 sets of chrome 16 inch wheels, and a new tri flow exhaust. He took it up to 140 with me in it the one day this past summer.. I was scared shitless. It is VERY stable at that speed.
The dumberst thing he did was put m5 badges on his car..but I don't hate him for it. He did it when he was 16 (now 17) He goes one of the top private prep highschool's in The northeast. Everyone has a nice car.. He did it so he could fit in he said. His best friend has a 97 carerra..he's only 17. They all think his car is a real m5.. He gets a kick outta that. Check out my link below under Bob's E28. This car is no junker, ricer whatever. I can't get him to take off the badge. oh well

I'm looking for a 535i or IS Ryan myself.. as a E30 saver daily driver. I've learned alot about E28's...after all my first car was a royal blue metallic 87' 535iS automatic.. I totaled it 2 months after I got my licence when i was 16.. Then I got my E30....That's how I got it..
They are solid cars, and are very stable and comfortable.
I know my E28's.. I still kinda miss my old E28.. But I love the E30 more.
      Sorry for the rambling.

Good luck searching for the E28.
      check out My E28.com
My bro is a member there..but never posts cos he's studying all the time ..or practicing/playing bball

      ttyl..good luck 8)

Ryan - this is probably a dumb question, but you are looking at only 5spds, right?

U got issues bro. :x So what if I have an automatic.. It's only $800 or somethin like that to convert to a stick.. Maybe someone will teach me sometime. Some day after bball season my brother will teach me.. No big deal. I heard it's easy to learn.

My local bmw cca buddies joke with me about the slushbox....But they Don't ATTACK me like u and cheap ass charlie do.
I got lots of $ man, wait till u see what happens to my car this summer. I've just started with it :!: Why am I doing it to my car..why do I spend alot of $ on my car? Well I do it 1.) cos I love the car. and 2.) because my best freind who passed away wanted one exactly like it !
In the last 3 days I've got rare ACS side skirts, and NEW euro grilles (thanks again Chris)
          Pretty good week, eh. :P

RESPECT each other's car. I wouldn never rip on anyone or anyones E30. I love all E30's. But if u attack me like that ..buddy I'm coming right back at ya.

I don't think that anyone deserves to be Disrespected here. After all we all love the E30's.

i think it would be a good choice, even if u end up with an auto. its just supposed to be a crusier isnt it? the m3's would be your fun car.

I own both a e28 and e30. The e28 has one distinct advantage. You can put huge brakes on the car for little money. e31 and e32 front brakes bolt right up. e32 and e34 540 rear brakes bolt right up. The m30 is also a bullet proff motor and is an awesome power plant for turbo charging. In the end they are very similar cars. If I had to leave one normally aspirated, I would choose the e30. It's much quicker right out of the box.

Now turbo charged, you cannot make a stock m20 e30 as fast as a stock m30 535i.

                Good Luck,
                Todd

Go for it, then if it ever gets recked or whatever swap the engine into an E30. We have a 528e and it's lot nicer to drive then my 318i's. but about right on with the 325i it's more comfortable but not as fast. Plus then handle realy nice and feel more stable then the E30.

                    cool thanks guys.
no, I am looking at 5spd's ONLY. I do NOT like auto's. I would have to find the *perfect* car to make me buy an auto over a 5spd. I have had 6 cars so far, and they have all been manuals.

I am excited about my decision. I don't think the factor of the car being big will bother me as I have my M3 for weekend/sport driving, and I want a fast highway cruiser...

any good engine mods for cheap that make it rip? I heard the chips for the M30 make HUGE gains...

There are NO huge gains to be had with bolt ons. A chip is the best for the money. Expect about 10rwhp at the most. A gear change will liven it up but kinda defeat the purpose of hwy cruiser. Do suspension and brakes mods and you'll be really pleased with the car. The car can be made to stop quicker than your M3 ever dreamed of!

535is's are cool cars, and they have a lot of torque.

I hear a good upgrade for them is a diff. I think 3.45 or 3.73 is the way to go, because they have rather long gearing stock.

                          Ryan-

What's your budget for an E28? There's a guy on BayE30.net....his user name is E28Jay. He has an '88 535is for sale (not sure if its sold or not) and he lives in the Bay Area. Last time I checked he lowered his price to $7700/obo. I've seen this car in person a couple times and its impressive. See what I mean.....

the M30 was always held back somewhat by U.S. emissions regulations. A Dinan chip (at least for an E34 535i) adds a little over 40hp (41-43?). But that's only at WOT.
