    When buying salvage cars..specifically e30's

Ive always been told salvage cars are no good.. but are they. what do I look for in a salvage titled car. what are the benefits and downsides of purchasing a salvaged e30? Or does it even matter. The car im looking at looks legitimate.. no frame damage.

It depends on what it was salvaged for. If it was theft there could be serious damage from that.

e30s can get salvaged these days from a fender dent, so always get as much info about the reason as you can. avoid frame damage and quarter panel buckles and you will be fine

My track rat was given a salvaged title and the only reason it was there is because he parked in a tow zone!

As for value of the car yes it depreciates the value so don't buy an M3 with one and expect tip top dollar for it one day!

Check with your insurance company as some will not cover a salvaged car.

Thanks fellas. I just spoke to the owner of the e30 and he said it was salvaged because the previous owner didnt pay the DMV for registration. Something like that. Is there a way to find out if this is legitimate. Like a carfax.. or anything on that lines? preferabally free lol :]

I'd check with the DMV. See exactly what they can tell you.

The DMV is like $10 for a printout.

My car has a salvage title, because it was hit in the rear a few years before I bought it. But there was no frame damage, and all the body work was repaired correctly. The only hitch to it is that I can't put comprehensive coverage on the car.

My buddy's e30 was a salvage title because someone threw a rock or something through his rear window when he left it at a friends house

                      Listen

don't buy a salvage car as general rule especially if you plan on sinking thousands into it with modifications etc. when it comes time to sell it, there will always be headaches and suspicion regarding your motives. banks will usually only lend you half of the money (i'm not refering to new cars in general). Even if you crash it in the future, expect the insurance company to offer half of the value.

having said that anything will cause a salvage title on an e30 given their depreciated value but seriously, they are way too many e30 right now at reasonable prices to be considering a salvage title vehicle.

Also, if you do find one, and the seller doesnt disclose the title from the get go, walk away. Nothing worse then someone who is not upfront in my book. When it comes to cars, dont trust anyone, and i mean anyone...from doctors, to priest, or anyone on this board regardless of feedback. It's just common sense, have the car inspected, it will be a great bargain tool and potentially let you know what you are in for. The cost on these things can add up pretty quickly and because they are old, expect things to be wrong with them.

Thankfully, I don't have to worry about that. :)

I can offer some input seeing as I just purchased a salvaged e30 from an auction. Let me tell you, the damage was minimal. It runs and drives straight from the lot. Only parts I truly needed to get for it include the hood, fender, right grill, right headlamp assembly, and the lower valence. I got all of that for $100 off a parts car.

I'd just make sure to pay less than half of what a clean titled vehicle in similar condition. Lowball hard.

buying a salvage is not really a big deal if you plan on keeping it. A 20 plus year old car with high milage you dont really need to worry about resale, loans or comp insurance unless it is a super rare car. mine is a reconstructed title and it has a fender buckle in it but you can only see it in the rain or when its dirty. the only real problem i have with it is the trunk doesn't quite line up with the body and i have a leak. I wouldnt turn my head just cause its salvage/reconstructed.
