I always wash my engines WARM, and leave them RUNNING.
This will help to evaporate any water that gets into areas it shouldn't be in. Keep it running and give it a quick drive afterwards and you will be good to go. If you have a misfire ir will usually clear up in a few miles once the water burns off of the plug wires and dist cap.
Make sure to get up underneath and clean the steering rack and the block from the bottom, this makes it much nicer to work on.
I like to pressure wash cars before I work on them as it makes it much easier to deal with everything.
I say shut off the engine, soak it down with simple green or another bio cleaner, and then let it sit for 3-5min. Fire it back up and start washing. Just use common sense and you will be fine. Belts will squeek for a while until they dry off, but you will be good after a quick drive.
