I'll let you guys know if I don't buy it. Now I'm worried about the labor.. how much in labor it's going to cost me to get everything done.

dude, 1500 for a clean 318is is a great deal. i love mine so much for DD duty, it's economical, cheap to maintain, and SO fun to thrash through corners. I kept pace with my friends miata on coilovers through some crazy mountain roads in georgia. don't pay to get stuff done, DO IT YOURSELF. the only thing i had to pay for on my basically complete(no bottom end) rebuild is to get my head shaved and get some pitted areas taken out of it which was a total of $400. parts for the timing components can get expensive though. add a lightweight flywheel, chip, and suspension and you have a quick and fun DD.

Not sure what the law is in New Jersey but in kentucky you can have the owner sign over the title but leave it blank and don't put your name until you want to keep it. Then when you sell it just have the buyer fill it in. Then again kentucky automotive laws are seriously loose and even more losely enforced.

                        Seriously though, buy the car.
West German BMWs, they just don't make the same as they did before the wall fell.
^Case in point: Auto-Repair Technology. Everytime my car isn't starting or acting up I let it sit, sometimes for an hour, sometimes for days. But it eventually fixes itself.

have the seller sign the title, and not date it. if it is over a certain amount of days from the sale date (30 or 45 maybe? don't remember), the DMV will tack on an extra charge. fill out the buyer information when you determine what you want to do with the car.

To answer your question: the only way to do this if the owner does not sign your info on the title. HOWEVER, you cannot drive it without registering it. Therefore, all you can do is keep it in your driveway/garage.

What exactly are you trying to do?

                              nope.. still undecided :)

I'm actually thinking about buying it and selling it for profit (instead of paying for parts + labor). So this way I can have more $$$ to buy something well maintained.

alright I'll try to get the title without my info on it, thanks.

Only problem with that is you will not be able to legally drive the car anywhere. No test drives, no around the block...
