No offense Jon, but nylon strings are girly. IMO, its best to start with steel. It only hurt for a little and I got callouses quickly.

Are you fucking kidding? Some of the most beautiful guitar music ever has been played on a nylon. If you don't like nylon, then you can't call yourself a guitarist. I spent big bucks adding a nylon to my collection and plan on learning Flamenco in the near future.

I am astonished one would even say that.

Get an Ibanez RG! That's what I started with.

            your the man for that.
People, you cant tell someone what kind of guitar to get if you dont even know what kind of music he is wanting to play/learn. It sounds like everyone is just stating what they would do. Epiphone is just a cheaper version basicly of Gibson. Thats what I have, an Epiphone Les Paul. I wish I had a gibson. If you are into metalcore or stuff along those lines I would get an Epiphone, thats why I got one.
What do you want to play?, then I can help you out.

Depending on what kinda music you like buy an electric with a humbucker. Not a single pickup like a Fender. I hate Fenders. I play Gibson :)
Not all fenders are single coil, you can find them with humbuckers as well.

i started playing about 7 years ago and learned on an electric.. if i could do it again i'd play accoustic for sure... I have a fender big apple strat with the dual duncan pick up's and i think it sounds awesome for an electric guitar. I also love the feel of the fenders... you could pick up a standard US MADE strat for around 500... you've gotta start playin man, it's a blast andreally relaxin...

Floyd Roses are easy once you get the hang of them!

As for what style you're playing, I highly recommend an Ibanez/Jackson/B.C. Rich if you're into metal--especially shredding! Basically, if you're into any metal, pick up an Ibanez. They're versatile and have a great sound. Get the S-series if you want a smoother, deeper tone for your rock music. Get an RG if you want grinding, grouchy distortion with your riffs. If you're into Dave Matthews, though, pick up a Taylor.

I know the make ones with humbuckers, fender is still garbage though. :)

Hehehhee..I have an original American Made (Really early production) BC Rich Bich in Canary Yellow. :)

Doesn't sound as good as my Gibson Flying V though. :)

i bought a steel string alvarez used at a shop for $120, had an ugly sticker on it i had to remove. one of the nicest acuostics i have played. its not a new shitty one, its one of the pretty older nice ones. you just have to look around, and definately start acoustic, it wil lbuild your fingers and you dont need an amp as well. good luck

Hah, I disagree. I've got an american tele and I love it. It all depends on the style of music you want.

Hey, thanks for all the responses. I like a lot of types of music but mostly classic rock and punk rock. I don't have a specific style I want to lean, just rock and roll. Due to your responses I'm now thinking about getting an electric and a cheap acoustic, depending on prices I find. Right now the Epiphone SG is the front runner but I'm looking into Ibanez.

                              Possibilities:

I forgot to mention you should, er, "test drive" the guitars before you buy them. Different guitars have different neck and body feels to them. For instance, my Ibanez's neck was like a piece of plywood in terms of thickness and the body molded to mine, but I played a Gibson Flying V and the neck was like a baseball bat and the body felt funny when I sat down. Plus, how are you going to know how it sounds over the internet?

                                Hit up a Sam Ash/Guitar Center--stat!
