I went to the dealer and got the later looking key (early 90s) WITH light and cut for $26. Was cut there in a couple minutes and I was good to go.
Yeah that's the key I have, the one with the little light built in. There aren't any dealers that are around the corner from me because most are in the suburbs so I was wondering if I could buy one online and have it cut somewhere local.
I dont know the part #, I went and got this long before I knew anything about E30s. Its just the key the gave me. I had to replace my older style lighted one because the edges had worn so much that it barely started the car.
Ive also seen it used in E32/E34. Its head is a bit bigger and the light part slides out instead of actually taking the keyhead apart

I got the one that looks just like that for my wife on ebay, but hers just has the roundel stamped in the plastic, not an insert like that one. I want the one in the pic!
I asked at the dealer as I want a spare.. The parts guy mentioned something about verifying the proper key by the letter on the key itself. There's two of em, S and E i think it is. One of the two is longer than the other, so make sure to verify length and depth.
