    What would you do?

    My question:

What would you do if you woke up and found out that 1,000 dollars from your bank account was gone?

What would you do if you had a suspicion as to how and where it happened?

    Long story short -

I rarely use my debit pin when purchasing anything as far as security goes, including gas. Went to get gas at the local Costco as 91 octane was $3.05/gallon because my girlfriend suggested it as it was cheaper and told me to go before it closed on June 4, 2010 at around 9 pm PST (closes at 9:30pm M-F). I did notice when I arrived that several, if not half, of the gas pumps were already blocked with cones. Slid my card with ease, entered my pin, pumped in gas and off I went.

I really didn't purchase anything with my card over the weekend as I did have cash on me at the time, about 80 dollars, so I never bothered checking my account as I already knew how much I had in there. Felt like I needed to check it as I do have clinicals soon and I would still need to purchase scrubs/equipment for my field of study and when I checked it this morning at around 8:20 - 8:30am I found out this.

    EDIT: Just added

To further support my suspicion of post #9 - I know for a fact they used a card and a pin as they went to two separate ATM machines during the weekend (while the banks were closed) and pulled 500 dollars from each transaction/machine. /edit

    I've already done the following:

    - Contacted the fraud department of my bank
    - Filed a Police report of Identity Theft
    - Contacted Costco General Manager of the possibility that it may be an inside job

I really hate to be sitting back while this fucker spends my money without a care in the world and would really love to give this asshole a beating worth 1,000 dollars at minimum while at the same time prevent it from happening to another. But yes, we all know taking things into your own hands can usually make things worse if not really bad.

I would remove all traces of money from the account while you still have funds there.

Your bank should help you out.

Yes, that is what I'm trying to do... but I really do hate (with conviction) the fact that someone steals something they never deserved in the first place and then lives life with it feeling they've accomplished a good deed.

Nope, no online banking. I know for a fact there has been occurrences of people attaining the PIN number of atm cards through methods of film/adhesives applied to the PIN pads of the gas pumps.

My suspicion is that is what they did, and attained my full 16 digit atm number from inside the computer of the gas station (hence why I think it was an inside job and told the General Manager [well my older brother did as he knows him very well].

With my 4 digit PIN, and my card number, it would only make sense that they could somehow mimic the magnetic portion of any card and imprint using some type of card machine to apply whatever they wanted [same technology when it comes to really expensive fake ID's that can be slid].

I've heard of little cameras that are used as well (especially at gas stations). I think I'm going to start covering the keypad whenever I enter my PIN like a paranoid douchebag. I fucking HATE thieves. Hate, hate, HATE.

Last year my WF card was "cloned", that's what WF fraud dept told me after I did the police report and waited a week or maybe it was two. They eventually reversed everything and I got my money back. I never lost the car, and the card was used in the city I've never even been to, and it was used to purchase a GIFT card a local grocery store. They traced it down to the store, time and even terminal but didn't go any further. Closed account, card etc.

                      Crazy huh?

They also have readers that they place over the front of the area that the card is swiped in. They let some folks swipe their cards through and then pull it off. Connect it to a computer and BAM ! Instant Debit / Credit Card numbers. Wonder if they strategically placed the cones to divert all prospective purchasers of fuel to the ATM's that they had rigged?

So it's best to use CASH or CC (since it's EASIER to get your money back from CC than from your Debit card).

I had a housecleaner that stole 2 checks and cashed them for 10k in 2006. Bank of America put the 10k back in my account as they discovered that the signature on the checks was complete bogus. I guess thats what I get for hiring an illegal.

Happened to my friend. He got a call from his bank asking him about his recent purchases, turns out his "card" was being used at the mall on the other side of the US. He got a new card and numbers and all his money back within a week.
