My car was possibly in germany at some point?

I've been thinking about why it had this plate with it on it when i bought it... which obviously doesn't mean its related to the car. The car was left at the guys house i got it from by his friend, who left it there in his garage since 2004. He didn't know anything about it at all, or about cars in general.

I didn't really think much about the plate until i took out the card for how to put the top and and down and found this paper underneath it.

    front:

    back:

I looked into the plate and found out its an export plate and here's some info...

"Export plates (also known as "Ausfuhrkennzeichen", customs plates) are used for exporting vehicles abroad. The plates are the only ones which do not have the blue Euro strip on the left and the owner does not have to be a German resident to register the car. The date on the red strip on the right hand side does not show the expiration date of the plate; instead it shows the expiration date of the vehicle insurance. After this date the vehicle must have left Germany."

Here's the car, obviously U.S. spec...

Anyone know what's up with this or have any information to share?

edit: found this out about EDSCHA
"Edscha AG has been boosted by winning two new contracts from Daimler and Volkswagen. As part of its restructuring, the company will cut 90 jobs out of 2,300 in Germany. Because of its healthy order book, no production jobs in Germany will be in cut. Instead, the 90 non-production jobs will be eliminated from Edscha's headquarters in Remscheid and its convertible roof unit in Hengersberg."

Yep. They probably used your car as a taxi in Germany, and flipped the odometer over a million miles before they exported it to the US. Sorry dude.

Convertible 2 door taxi? That sounds a little uncommon.

Euro delivery. Car was built in Germany then customers flew there, drove around for a few days then returned back home and car was loaded for export to US.

The year on his euro plate says 2008. The piece of paper says 1987. Those 2 things are mutually exclusive.

The year on the plate isn't when the tags expire. I read that that's when the insurance expires... which still seems odd, so your probably right.

If it were really a euro car it seems unlikely that the bumpers, instrument cluster, check panel etc. were all swapped so idk.

                          Hey. Stop crushing his dreams.

It was probably owned by a former SS officer who took an assumed name and forged papers to avoid being prosecuted. Living off the cash garnered working as a cab driver in a Bronzit E30, he yearned for the day he'd be reunited with his daughter, whom he was able to smuggle into the United States under yet another alias. Alas this day would never come, as he lost his mind and fell into state care. This was in 2008. The car was then deemed anti-semitic and deported to the United States, lay around in a New Jersey impound lot, until it was dragged into Maryland, where Ubernasty could give it the TLC and shocker stickers angled just-so on the vinyl rear window, that it richly deserved.
