Thanks Jon, working on my cars is my hobby. I got a job as a mechanic for the summer and honestly i think making my e30 perfect would be a very rewarding learning experience. However many influential people in my life are advising me that my car could turn into a money pit. I could spend in upwards of 10k and my car could still be on blocks. This is why i'm looking for factual evidence as to the comparison of these two cars.I was thinking the same thing. The E36 M3 would be the more cost-effective as well as "turn-key" option. We can go on & on & on until the cows come home about how we love/hate E36s. My advice, if costs are a concern, go with the newer alternative. Clean and well maintained E36 M3s can be had for sub-$10K these days. The fixed up E30 would be a labor-of-love project....you get just as much enjoyment preparing it as you would driving it.

A 20+ year old german car could turn into a money pit? Who would've thought.
To put it simply, if you think you're 'dumping money' into the car and can only think about the resale value than you need to move on.

Both cars are OLD...depends on you how much money you'll spend on each. You can easily spend 40k on each or spend nothing and fix things are they break and drive a pile.Mtech1 v8 build thread - https://www.r3vlimited.com/board/sho...d.php?t=413205

Any car can be a money pit, but if your planning on building one up, i'd go with the e30. They're more reliable, parts are relatively cheap and if you buy the e36 you'll miss george graves!sigpicComment

^ does george even make stuff for e36s?
buy the e36 and stop worrying. everyone on here who has a "nice" e30 has "dumped" money into their "money pit" to get the car where it is. after you're done fixing it, then it will be much nicer and more reliable than an e36 m3. 10k into an e30 that will hold its value buys ALOT of car. 10k into an e36 m3 will get you a relatively stock car that isnt unique or rare.
just get a civic.sigpic
