BMW has actually come out and said that it was intended more for the European market, filling more of the X5's niche over there.
It's been out since last year, predates the crosstour by a bit.
It's a crossover, those sell well. It's easier to sell a 70-80k "SUV" like car than a station wagon to Americans.
Bangle actually had nothing to do with the car, he hasn't been the primary designer for nearly 5 years. He was in more of a mangerial role. These cars all fall on Hooeydonk. As for sales? There's apparently about an 8 month waiting list on these cars now. The 5er wagons never moved.

So what you're saying is he didn't draw it but he approved it. Good to know. He is even more responsible than I thought. Thank god he got fired.Bangle actually had nothing to do with the car, he hasn't been the primary designer for nearly 5 years. He was in more of a mangerial role. These cars all fall on Hooeydonk. What's wrong with it? I like the current GT & X6 body lines. Much nicer than the X5.
Take a 3 box SUV shape, make it aerodynamic, oh, by the way, you gotta meet new much more stringent Euro rear end crash requirements. Oh yea, BTW, you know those Pedestrian crash requirements we just came up with 2 years ago? Put those on there too. Make it look like a 5 series.
Oh, here's your competition.
