e30 w/ mustang swap on Jalopnik

BMW is a company known for their engines. That being said, today's Nice Price or Crack Pipe 3-Series has an engine you all should know, but will its price make you want to have it keep you company?

I've thought it would be cool to build one of these, but theres no way in hell I'd pay that much...discuss.

peerless has been talking about it for a while, but not gone anywhere with it.

there is a 5.0 swap somewhere in the project garage, though.

because a V8 sounds so much nicer than the ticking of the rocker arms on an M20.
not that I would do it, but it would be cool to drive if it was de-customized in the interior area.

I honestly don't see where any of that $14,000 went to. That thing is so badly thrown together. Might be fast and fun to drive, but yuck.

sillyness. why spend all that $ and dump a ford motor in there. sure its cheaper to maintain and upkeep but in that case one should of bought a stang. im just saying, im not a fan of non BMW motors in BMWs.

I'm sure that doesn't upset the handling at all..

Considering the cost, power, and how it fits. Why not LS1?

This. It's not a 50 it's a 302, I know it's the same size but the 50 comes fuel injected an all kinds of 80's ford crap and the 302 is basically from the 40's. Besides it's a vert, who gives a crap?

                            actually...

since the v8 is a shorter engine, it would actually be more mid engined than a straight six. so that helps balance the car better. m20 is also taller than a v8. i dont know about this ford v8, but it probably has an iron bottom end so that means a lot of extra weight. but an aluminum ls1 weighs around 400lbs. and so does an m20.

this is a common argument in the rx7/8 world with v8 swaps. the end result is that the power is worth the slight decrease in handling. however, this argument makes more sense in the rotary world. since, iirc, a renesis longblock weighs around 275lbs. in the e30 world... the argument isnt handling, its cost. e30s are just not worth dropping an ls1 in. especially when a bunch of other engine swaps have been done to death and there is a ton of information on it. s52 for example. not easily attainable 400whp, but its been done a quite a few times. you're not breaking new ground. the one guy that did the ls1 swap into e30 here had to do a shit ton of fabrication. i wouldnt do that to put an ls1 into an e30. however, i would do that to put an ls1 into my rx8.

BMW has V8's too... Putting a 302 in a E30 is like putting implants on a shawty who already has DD's. Yea sure its cool and hot but it completely ruins the perfect setup from the begining.
