I've been into E30's for 17 years and have never seen anything like this, anywhere. I saw these in person and it appears to be original. It's an all leather door card but not the typical euro version. Very curious about it.

I have seen door cards like this once before. There is a red M-Tech II running around OC with an all black leather interior & these identical door cards. I have looked at the car & talked with the owner, it is a genuine car, with the leather console, badges, 15" weaves etc. He said that he was the second owner, the car was all original & bought the car from Pacific BMW in Glendale in 1993 with 16,000 miles on it.
I think the reason for the difference is the option of the M-Tech package. It appears all cabrios that had the full M-Tech $4700 package added, also got the cloth seats & cloth inserts in the door cards as they were part of the package.
Dealers ordered the M-Techs fully loaded with every option possible. The cars originally had a all black leather interior & for some reason these 2 (this red one & the silver one you show) were ordered with the package but not the cloth interior. BMW added the other interior parts of the package & just left off the cloth. If the cloth was only in the door card inserts & not the seats, that probably didn't sound right to the factory, so they made up some all black leather door cards.
While not proof positive, it's seems logical that they would have done that as a solution for a demanding dealer. We know that there were a lot of exceptions made when these cars were being produced - from unusual interiors, to build dates that lengthen the date range of what was generally accepted, to the black ones that were 91's & 92's sold to both US & Canada.
If you look at the original window sticker it will verify that these initially had the all black interiors before the package was added.
Jack, that makes perfect sense. I did notice the leather panel is just an insert where they could switch between leather/cloth. Remember that sterling M Tech cabby from Seattle that sold on R3v? it didn't have the M Tech cloth or leather but had a standard cloth instead. Guess that shows not everyone liked the M Tech cloth.

Yes - I think the guy's name was Justin & his interior cloth was totally unique & he states it came that way. It was almost a rose colored textured weave.
