Toyota acceleration scandal mostly caused by driver error

"The results suggest that some drivers who said their Toyota and Lexus vehicles surged out of control were mistakenly flooring the accelerator when they intended to jam on the brakes."

A preliminary study into accidents involving Toyota cars suggests driver error may have played a part in many incidents.

Most of us car people knew all along, just like what happened with Audi in the 80s. In 35 of 58 black-box-equipped cars that were studied, the driver never touched the brake pedal. The driver's were so retarded they got the brake and accel pedals mixed up and crashed. In 9 of the remaining cases, brakes had been applied 'late', well after the acceleration has reached dangerous levels. Again, driver error in mixing up the pedals.

More proof that we need to test or senior citizen drivers more often for driving ability.

Old people suck. I remember this years ago. Awful.

On October 20, 2006, Weller was found guilty of 10 counts of vehicular manslaughter after his vehicle mowed through a crowded open-air marketplace in Santa Monica. The following month, the judge sentenced him to five years' felony probation, saying that Weller deserved to go to prison, but at nearly 90 years of age and suffering from heart disease, he would simply be a burden to taxpayers.

Saw this coming. Sucks for toyota that their sales demographic is boring non-car people with slow reactions.

Went with a friend to toyota dealership because his sunroof drain was effed. Asked about the "accelerator getting stuck problem" and he(the dealer guy)said that it happened because they had an aftermarket floor mat that caused the accelerator to stick.

There are actually 2 recalls, one for the floormats -this one is based on the aftermarkt mat getting stuck under the pedal. Toyota wants to make sure you have a correct mat.

And one for the pedal itself. The recall includes a shim, cutting the pedal shorter so it can't catch on floor mats and a software reflash for cutting throttle when the brake is activated.

Needless to say I have yet to take in our Tundra. I'm hoping the recalls will be recalled :p

they did a couple things under the recall, one was shimming, one was cutting, one was putting in a new piece of foam under the carpet behind the pedal, some cars got a ecu reflash.

also toyota has some more serious (in the cars terms, not deadly) tsb's that people don't pay attention to.

                      Not surprised.

I bet many of those people thought they could sue/get out from underwater car loans/etc.

some guy put in prison for trying to do a murder suicide with him and his family got let go because he had a 1996 toyota camry and went 90 mph into another car. They now blamed it on the faulty accelerator. How could that happen?

impossible, the recal was on pedals that were not even made by toyota and in 96 they were not installed on ANY vehicles.
