    CAD Class Research

I am drawing a 14" bottlecap for the rest of my high school career (about 7 more weeks) and I am about halfway done drawing it. This is basically my final project before I graduate. I need to know the standards for wheel strength and tolerances in circularity and what not for the wheel. I am going to contact a local wheel manufacturer (Enkei) and see if they can help me. I have looked a lot online but always come up with nothing. Do you guys have any hook ups that you know where I can find this info? I will post a pic of the drawing that I have done so far later.

    What program are you using?

To draw the wheel I'm using Inventor 8. If you arent familiar with it, its a 3d modeling program. We use AutoCAD sometimes. But I hate that program with a passion for most parts. Inventor I think is very user friendly and I just started drawing this year, so it has come to me easier than the other programs. Some kids in the class are using ProE and Wildfire or something like that.

I've taken a cad course... unfortunatly i learned on autocad 98 lt which is the absolute sissyist version of the program, expecially when running on windows 95 computers, my school is hella poor

What is the industry standard for cad software these days anyways?

Why is it going to take 7 weeks to model a bottlecap?

I modeled a complete and acurate 14in basketweave in a couple hours in Inventor R6.

I use Inventor R9 Pro now.

Its High school. All you do is BS 90% of the time. Think about what he is doing right now. He is in class on the bmw forums ;)

                  got some help possibly.

Im not 100% sure what aluminum wheels are cast in but for my formula car we used a 6061-T6 which should be more than strong enough and ductile enough. Most people I know use solidworks cause Pro makes everything a major pain when it dosent ned to be. Its a powerful program, it just has ghetto user interface. SW is powerful enough for what most people need to do and is much better to work with IMO. Both programs have their flaws. I have spent tons of time In various CAD programs and refuse to use Pro-E if that gives you any insight. If you get the wheel finished I can alwas FEA it for you in whatever material you select. Depends on if you want to have it cast or machined ect.

Here is a picture of our formula car, 100% designed in SW and FEA done by DesignSTAR.

AutoCAD has many better uses than 3D-modling (i.e. easily transferable files into GIS programs).

Never messed around with Inventor but I have seen a few videos from the autodesk website. It looks pretty neat.

                    Good luck.

Screw the bottle cap man. Model something cool. Like a complete m20.

I prolly have 80 hours or so into that one.

damn. Nice Jordan. The reason it takes me a while to do it...

I dick around a LOT in class. Like sit on r3v and read pointless posts, make pointless posts, you know. The usual. I hardly ever do ANYTHING in there. All I do is sit on the internet. This is hard stuff if you are just startin too. Everybody has to start somewhere. Does anybody know where I can get wheel tolerances and strength standards? Or any tests that the wheels go through before leaving the factory?

we use 4Gs of acceleration on the mass of the wheel assembly to do analysis for our car. Thats pretty standard for bump calculations. or figure out the weight of the car at every corner and just multiply that by a factor of safety of say 3 and design your wheel around the heaviest corner. I would say generalized tolerances would apply to the design of this, I cant think of anything that would have a super critical dimension.

                            My work in progress:

Over 80 different parts so far. Fully working suspension (aside from springs that compress). Other parts are done too, this is just an old pic.

But I speak from an engineering point of view, other cad softwares are used for different applications. IE, architecture, Software rendering, etc.
