Depends who. I replaced a side mirror on my neighbor's camry. Took less than five minutes. Didn't charge because it was easy and I was trying to be a good neighbor. That made the top ten list of worst decisions I've ever made. Now, anytime I try to work on my own cars they come over and ask me to fix something else on their cars. When I find time to work on my cars, I don't want to be bothered about where your oil keeps going.

Sorry for the rant, it's been bugging me for awhile.

Cliffs: Always charge for your time/skills, don't bother being nice.

You change her BJ (ball joint). She gives you a BJ in return. BJ for BJ. It's fair. You bust your ballz. She busts yours.
Brake harder. Go faster. No shit.

I'd say if concern over your liability in the event of a failure has crossed your mind, don't do the repair. Maybe your subconscious mind picked up the scent of another suspension component that is ready to fall off.

And if it's one of those junk-ass mid sized Blazers, well, you need to ban yourself from working on those altogether.

To further add to this- Dont even tell your inlaws/families friends that you can swing a wrench.

Would you do..? Hell yeah, easy money.
                Is it worth it? Yes.
Is it risky? Depends if you know what your doing.

Don't do it. It's the same scenario of washing your car and someone chiming in with "Hey! Is mine next?"

BS. Put your prowess deep in her hot sister and remain the asshole that won't fix her heap.

                        This.

I recently did an auto tranny swap in a dude's apartment parking lot. Check my blog for the story. (Cliffs: car hadn't moved in a YEAR, swap fixed it.)
Anyways, it is risky. I just talk to the person before I do anything. I'm not a magician, and I'm not an ASE/UTI whatever qualified, so I'm going to do my best. Obviously, I won't be charging "shop rates" for this reason. I may not make very much money this way, however, I'm adding to my resume/experience here.

I could go on and on, but the original quote stands.

I don't charge for automotive work ever. Just food and beer, bc if something goes wrong, well, they can't really say shit.

Unless it's a joke of a job, like an oil change or something.
