1/2 - 1 inch of lateral play in driveshaft. CSB???

From under the car, up on jacks and ramps, I push the driveshaft side to side (latereally) and theres about an inch of play. It actually moves that much.

When I accelerate from a stop, I frequently get a thumping behind and between the front seats, from the tranny tunnel. Or so that is how it sounds. I also have heard a howling from the rear worse when turning right, so Im thinking thats a L rear wheel bearing.

Is this the CSB? U joints look ok from what I can see, except 1 of the 4 bolts that attach the rear ujoint of the DS to the diff flange is gone. The play in the driveshaft seems to confirm CSB for the thumping. I think.

    Ideas anyone?

    Thanks...

you are right on the CSB, it is blown.

however, CSBs become blown from bad u-joints on the driveshaft. you can just replace the CSB, but it is not a long lasting solution.

Wonder if the missing bolt on the diff flange could have/be done/doing it?

And a rebuilt driveshaft unless you want to be doing the CSB every year as it keeps tearing itself apart.

I think the missing bolt and the guibo looking pretty worn might be the problem. Im going to replace guibo, CSB and all 4 bolts on the diff flange. See what that might resolve.

call around top your local driveshaft shops and price it out.

i did a little searching and a local speciality shop pried it at around $400 exchange. i made a call to another shop i had had a lot of dealing with. they had closed down shop and moved up north, but gave me the number of the shop that bought all of the equipment down here.

              bam!
              $75 per joint
and a free balance if i did both (DUH.....)
they also would install my CSB that i had new for free while they were doing the work.

it is not a super big deal, but the u joints are peined in. they need to machine the yokes for snap rings and to accept a slightly larger u joint that is replacable. remind the shops of that so you get a correct estimate.
there is no reason you should not be able to get it done locally with a 1 day turn around time.

BTW Mercedes Benz is the same set up, if they can do an MB they can do a BMW.

Looks like I'll be hitting an Indy shop, around 500.00? Here in DFW. I guess I could look around some, or order the parts and find a shop/mech to install.

Anyone have any ideas Dallas-Ft Worth area?

is that $500 drive it in/drive it out or just to do the drive shaft?
if it is the latter that is pretty dam high.

Well no. Im hoping for that drive in/out and be happy with the work. CSB, Guibo and ujs/ds if needed. Maybe 750.00 adding on rear wheel bearing(s)

                          Good advice in here.

Definitely do flex disc, CSB, fresh driveshaft. Also, anytime I pull something old off on of these, all new bolts/nuts/washers as well. Cheap insurance, and it makes sure it comes back apart easily for future maintenance.

wheel bearings are around $250 a side shop rate IIRC. you may want to wait a little longer on that if you need them.
