I don't give a shit if he replicates the part... UUC doesn't own rights to the dimensions.... Fuck, if I had one in front of me I'd give him the dimensions... How he came and asked for it is what made him sound like a tool. He should go measure his stock part. There are two possible lengths for a selector rod anyway...

Now... I'm sorry, but saying you're not "stealing" because you're not profiting off of it is the most retarded thing I've ever heard. I guess I should go steal a bigger TV, or some nice sunglasses....Hell, maybe that bicycle that's always parked on my neighbors patio. Don't worry, I'm not planning on profiting!

As I have said numerous time the car is my DD and I need it obviously to get places. I will have to plan a time where I don't have school or something to give it to my friend.

Sorry, but you haven't proved anything. You are talking about stealing property of someone else. I am talking about reproducing something. You can reproduce a TV, sunglasses, or a nice shiny vibrator. The companies will not care at all unless they find that you have sold this product or tried to claim that you own the rights to the product.

You can get a spare selector rod at the junkyard so you don't have to pull the one from your car. Or I have a spare one readily available I'll give you for $5

Do you really think that you can make it for less than $100? Do you realize that if you paid for the shop time and materials to have a machinist make this it would likely be over $100?

Apparently my points are being made at a level clearly above what you're able to currently comprehend. Maybe you'll catch up if you actually get through college someday.

heres my take on the situation, if i were to make a product that i sold to the e30 crowd - id be more than a bit annoyed if someone else took a picture of said product, posted it on the internet and requested key dimensions so they could copy my design. im not saying you would have necessarily done anything illegal, but it would still piss me off regardless.

that said - its really how you approached the situation that bothers me. if instead, you started by saying that you were going to try and make your own product similar to the DSSR and you wanted to see if anyone knew the critical dimensions on the shift lever and transmission shift coupler (parts that it mates to). thats a whole different ball game. the end result is more or less the same, but the second method is much more polite and you dont come across as trying to blatantly ripoff a UUC product.

also, just because you say that you have no intentions of reproducing the part for sale, we have no way of knowing what your buddy intends to do with it. clearly, your buddy has access to a lathe and milling machine. hes going to spend a few hours making that part. once he knows its successful, hes going to have all he needs to start producing them himself.

Yeah you guys are just brilliant intellectuals haha. Stealing a product from another human or store is completely different from producing something on your own for your use.

I'm getting through college just fine. thanks for wondering.

Chris should have a patent on it then.

He's making it at work when he has time. He has other things he is required to do, he is doing me a favor. He will not have time to make more to sell. We are moral humans that won't do so. He is a good friend of mine and he said he would make it for me. He said its easy and probly won't take long at all.
