over-paying for a car you really want

I'm looking to chuck my S52 cabrio and 325i sedan and get a 318i slicktop sedan. One is up for sale for $4K, looks to be very nice, zero rust (so claimed) body & black non-sport interior, original, no mods. Guy says it drives beautifully, but again that could mean anything. I'm thinking the car will need suspension, brakes, etc. plus probably hoses belts and tune-up stuff. I would put in cloth seats since vinyl or leather sucks in Las Vegas, especially black.

I talked to the guy and he won't budge on price. Car is in another state & I'm having to go by photos and his story. So it might be as nice as he says, maybe not.

As you know, slicktops aren't exactly falling out of trees. What do you folks think about the pricing on this one? Supply and demand sucks on slicktops if you're wanting to buy one.

I sold my 318is slick about a year ago. It was a very clean,,, perfect body with 104k needed timing chain, h2o pump and a few other bits for 4.5k if that helps you any. They are hard to find, so if the owner knows it you are going to pay for it.

Does it being a "Slicktop" really justify you paying that much? Especially sight unseen? I'm a skeptic on this one but you really never do know. IMO I wouldn't pay more than 3k for a nicely sorted E30. I'm also a cheapskate though, so take that as you will.

I agree with Kid ... you can find a nicely sorted sunroof model for a lot less.

I asked myself the same thing until I actually sat in a euro slicktop car. This car was amazing, black headliner, non speaker rear shelf, black plaid sport seats. The portion where the check panel would be was completely missing, the headliner extended all the way to the windshield. It also had a German OBC and an M3 roof antenna. The car was short of amazing.

I don't know that I would get rid of two nice cars for one that needs money put into for parts and such.

4 grand isn't very much money. Buy it if you feel that it's worth it to you!

Slicktop? really? How about crank windows while you're at it? Better handling and weight savings? OK. This is true and might shave a tenth of a second off a full blown racecar. As rare as they may be I don't think it's anything to pay a premium for but if it's worth it to you...go for it.

should have about an inch more head room too, right? Also one less thing to leak. I like sunroofs but probably couldn't fit in a sunroof e30 with a helmet and stock seats, maybe racing seats bolted to the floor...

Would like to know what the head room difference is.

This is the reason. More headroom and less prep to do if you are going to have a track car. Anyone over 6'2 is going to have a hard time fitting in a sunroof car with a helmet on.
