Homologation papers is where you'll get all your answers about the different allowed combinations of wheels and tires. Most likely, everything else posted will be just hearsay. And don't forget that the shells built to fit these wheels and tires have not much left in common with a standard shell.
BTW 5 seconds of Googling lead me directly to the Homo Papers. ;-) Therefore me think you are on the lazy side...
There are many others Homo papers BTWBrake harder. Go faster. No shit.

Also realize the spec changed every year, so it's not as simple as seeing a single list. All of the manufactures in the series were lobbying for various upgrades to gain slight advantages. We all know about the 3 evolutions that the E30 M3 received, but even in between the official evolutions, the DTM santioning body allowed some changes to allow a manufacture to get back a little performance.
E30 M3 fender flares were to allow up to 10" wide wheels, but to do so everything had to be set just so for clearance, and even then clearances between tires and fenders, etc was probably about the thickness of a playing card. Not something you would want to do on anything that might see the street.
Werd.

Maximum size at the end of the M3 DTM days (1992) was 18" front and 19" rear. This required massive cutting in the front wheel well.Brake harder. Go faster. No shit.

Thank you guys. Laziness played a part, busy played a larger one. Eric, you're fine. If I'm reading everything you guys are saying right... The DTM vids I watched have cars running 18 and 19" wheels?...

Only if the DTM vids were from the 1992 season. The M3 had problem with rear tires overheating. So they made them taller... At the front, with 18" wheels, the top of the wheel well was seriously "massaged" to clear the tires. and at the back too.Brake harder. Go faster. No shit.

I know, especially using a 4-dr e30 shell instead of an e30m3 shell. I've got deep pockets though, trust me, I'm a professional.
