they are 8.5 width and what tire sounds good for these rims in for my e30 m3

They may "sound good" but they are too tall. Believe me, I have an e30 M3, and running an e36/e34 tire size will most likely bug you when the rear of the tire will hit the splash gard.

If they are 17s and 8.5" wide they are probably ET20. Maybe Et15. Somewhere around that ballpark if they were actual 5 Series fitment.

I would trust those guys with the tire size. I don't know much about those E30 M3s...
