Im gonna go ahead and chime in on this since Ive had loads of experience in all things traffic violation related. Ive gotten pulled over in both cars many times and given fix-it tickets (one that turned into a 300 dollar fine due to my being out of mind for a long time), but thats another matter altogether. Now in California they have the option of not issuing the $10 fix-it ticket and straight out giving you a fine. Technically, the plate MUST be on the front bumper of your car. If it isnt there, you CAN get a ticket. Some people get creative and put it on their dash or whatever and think they are legal, but that technically is illegal. It MUST be a California DMV issued plate (cuz I have a euro plate that actually has my driver plate # in front, also illegal) on the front bumper. Now of course some pigs will let shit slide, and some wont, that will be up to them, but if you want to be completely legal, it has to be on your front bumper. Lots of pigs down here in L.A. check to see if you have front plates cuz thats an easy reason for them to pull you over and check for other things wrong/illgeal with you/your car or your given gargo. Ive gotten close to 10 tickets for the front plate over my years driving. I have the legal plate on my 325 (daily driver) and I have a euro plate on the ///M3 with my actual ELP lettering. Its a risk you have to decide to take. Some people do years without any tickets for it, others....welll....are like me.

Sorry man. Sometimes you have to accept things, and some things are worth the trouble. I THOUGHT I could just pay the fines and be cool for school, but no.

i find that as long as you're not doing anything overtly stupid (like most e30 drivers), you won't get noticed. I mean, shit, my car doesn't exactly blend in with the scenery. but as long as you're responsible on the road, you won't give the police a reason to pull you over.

Nope. Ive had cops purposefully look right at my front plate area from the other side of the street so they could have a reason to pull me over. When Ive been behind them, they change lanes and I already know what theyre doing, I slow down, they slow down, they get behind me and light me up. Again, this theory all depends on the type of pig. I suppose its big city pigs, they are itching for a reason to look for something. I got handcuffed, sat in the patrol car, car searched, and trunk searched all for an illegal U-turn once. I had nothing on me, and I wasnt acting wierd or combative. This is an extreme, of course, and we ARE talking L.A. County Sherrifs. This never happened to me when I WAS doing things wrongly with all sorts of packaged goodies in the car. Good thing, eh?

i've been stopped 3 times in OR (for reference) for not haivng my front plate. Never ticketed, just warned. Twice in the e30, once in the e36. All three times they only stopped me for the front plate, and after checking my paperwork they let me go and just told me to get it attached. In both cases (the e30 and the e36 m3) the car does not have holes on the front to directly accept an american license plate. I had to buy the bracket for both of them - i can't remember if this is the same with other e30's as my last e30 had the PO screw the front plate into the bumper....
