Manual Tranny + remote starter + valet parking = oops

well...i saw it happen the other night... i was at work in boston at my security gig & a guy in the underground parking garage hit the remote starter on his spakin new 323ci, which then proceded to drive itself about 200 feet across the garage, clip a big cement pillar that just took out the passenger side mirror & then hit a concrete wall at an angle, which gouged the crap outta the passenger side of his front bumper, scratched up his fender & knicked up his Breyton deep dish rim

luckilly the wall stopped it 20 feet short of the e46 M3 it was headin for

"i ALWAYS leave it in Neutra"... well guess the valet guy didn't, huh... bet cha 100 bucks the next time he has his car parked by a valet driver, he tells em to do the same & will STILL think twice about hittin that start button

that is exactly why I bought a COMPUSTAR on all my cars. it prevents things like this from happening, as it doesn't let you start your car unless it's in neutral

Or just park your car yourself, and not waste your money on the compustar :P

that's what this guy supposedly did, but the valet guy had to move it to get another car out

hahaha, cool story hansel. :D Bummer about the E46.

I have done that at school a few times. Started my car (I always leave it in 2nd when parked), and forget to push in the clutch. You know the sound/feel I'm talkin about: "errrrummp"....head jerk....iS lip into the curb.....yadda, yadda, yadda.

Ever since I started driving, I religiously press the clutch before starting..that's the first give away when I sit in an auto and stab at the flooboard with my left leg

The fact that my e-brake doesn't work also contributes :D

LOL, I did that when I first tried to drive an auto, with the exception that I pushed the brake pedal with both feet. :) I learned from the first time though, I didn't for example try to use the "clutch" while driving.

I go through that everyday with the white e30

Then when I fix the black one, I'll probably be used to the slushbox again and I'll do the Stuart McHenry move.

The first time I went for a drive in my mom's 750iL I absolutely slammed my left foot on the brake before a stop sign while just cruising, man did I feel like a dumbass.

Is there a way that we can wire a clutch switch that won't let us start the car without the clutch disengaged? Maybe using the switch that cruise control uses? Or one from an e36? I always thought that was a cool function, plus I'm used to it after moving all the bimmers around in the shop
