the tensioner is supposed to spin freely right?

I was pulling out the timing belt today and since the Continental belt kit comes with a tensioner, I figured I'd replace it. While reading the Bentley, it said that the tensioner should spin freely. The old tensioner on my e30 spins freely, i.e. if I apply a small force, the tensioner spins for a couple seconds.

My new tensioner does not spin freely. Is this an issue? Should I just keep the old tensioner on, since nothing seems wrong? Or replace it because new>old and hope the new tensioner eventually loosens up? Or contact the seller and request a replacement?

    Thanks.

It should be smooth, but not spin freely. Tensioners are grease packed so they need to heat up and break in. Do not reuse the old one.

I think I should have just said, the new tensioner does not spin at all. I'll try to spin it, but it won't spin at all. It could be because it's been sitting in the cold for a while and so the grease is being stubborn.

Heat it up at room temp to see if it spins? or is that a no-no.

                This is counter productive.

                Also just replace it.
