Epic Road Trip

So I am planning along with a couple of my college buddies an amazing road-trip across the western US. The catch is that we are going in groups of two in cars that we have purchased for under $2000 (may be reduced to $1000), and we are going to do in essence a TSD rally between the landmarks and stopping points along the way.

I was thinking e30 at first, but now am leaning to 3rd gen camaro. Any opinions on other possible car choices?

Something fun but with some cargo space so you can carry tools. That would be sweet though!

the camaro is essentially a hatch with a very deep area in the rear (giggidy) for tools and shit

Wow sounds like a blast. Sorta Top Gear-ish. I would have a hard time driving a 3rd gen that was sub 2k though...... maybe some crazy 80's station wagon

Make sure it's got cop shocks, cop tyres, cop suspension, a plant motor and it runs good on regular gas.

And make sure it has a lot of pick-up.
