Why would you go with SAE? If you're gonna work on BMW's, you'll at least want to go metric.
Here's a start.

Metric sockets from 6mm to 22mm are the most commom sizes you'll find, then open ended wrenchs in 7,8,10,11,12,13,17,19, thin 32mm Bicycle headset wrench. Good set of jackstands and a nice Floorjack. I have basically the exact sockets I need in my tool box If I have never used them on the bimmer I have tossed them in a box and stuck it in one of the drawers. Also I recomend getting some socket organizers, I used the foam cut out ones from sears and love it as it makes life easier so I don't have to dig for sockets. When I worked at a Junkyard stripping e30's they had tools but all the sockets where just tossed in the draws so I just ussed my own tools as I spent half the time hunting for the socket.85 325e 2.7 ITB'd stroker

What about kid from E3S who allegedly installed an M30, then sucked a valve or blew a piston and needed to know the right size spark plug?
We only use Snap-On.
Snap-On 0wnz everything else.
I should know, I got owned by a 13mm 3/8" ratchet/socket. Split my skull open! 8)Below the radar...

actually you'll want 6-point sockets. 12 point are more likely to round a bolt. because a nut most of the time has 6 sides. so if you use a 12 point socket you are only grip on 1/2 of what a 6 point would.
just thought i'd clarify that.

I spent something like $500+ on tools last spring (never added it all up, but I was buying tools almost every day). I have just about everything now, although my spring compressor is a peice of crap. Anyone have a reccomondation on a decent spring compressor? Mine has a tendency to bind up and gouge the hell out of the springs, plus it can't fully compress the spring because of the way it attatches.
I also need a better torque wrench. Mine works fine for things like lug nuts, but my front hubs for example are torqued to 220ft-lbs, and my wrench only does 150.. I had to use a breaker bar with a big pipe to get it close enough after I maxed out my torque wrench.

Twelve point is for Aviation hardware. Six point is for standard hardware, proper tool for the proper hardware.
Facom is = to Snap On it's just the French equilvent of it. Widely available in EU for good price. Griot's Garage is way over priced on there stuff. I just abought a unique 3/8" rachet set that has a hollow driver that you can put allen keys though to do your Struts and stuff like that for 38 bucks. It's Facom too. I do have a Lista tool cabinet the Gov't gave me and I have my own personal Snap On two piece roll away.
It looks like the one listed as #5 in the ultimate garage set up.
Used tools too are a great bargain when you can find a shop that sells them. There is a shop in Worcester Mass that specializes in them. The advertise in the want ad.
