    Got some weekend projects done

Well, it's been spring cleaning/maintanence on my E30 and I have been getting a lot of things done. Yesterday, I refinished my tail lights and painted my door pulls black.

For those of you that painted tails never fade/oxidize, just look at the before picture of my tails! That is less than year old paint. I sanded all the old paint off, and resprayed them with Testors Transparent Candy Apple red this time. I usually use Transparent Ruby Red Metal Flake, but the Candy Apple turned out to be a MUCH better color match. I did 2 coats of red, followed by 2 coats of Testors Gloss Coat. Man, this is like the 5 times I have painted my tails and its by far the best job so far. Honestly, its pretty hard to tell they are painted from 5 feet away.

Next up, I painted the door pulls and map pockets with Duplicolor Vinyl & Fabric Color. The paint is great, with a nice spray pattern and it dries to a perfect OEM looking satin-black finish. I think the handles look great, and they match the black seats in my car good. My map pockets had also faded to a strange color, and I hate how they didn't match anymore.

I also did an oil change, and while I was at it I replaced my valve cover gasket. Low and behold, one of the studs for the valve cover gasket snapped so I spent the rest of the afternoon salvaging and replacing it. What a bastard that was! On to the pics.

TJ- you need to use a true automotive application clear coat, then your tails won't fade like that. (I've had mine painted on the corrado for at least 5-6 years and the M3 around 2 years) Best stuff i've found was a high heat clear used in airplane applications, but the stuff you find at your local autoparts store will work too. The testors stuff was designed for the inside of RC car bodies and models, nothing that would be exposed to the elements like a car is ;)

I understand that's why it fades, I don't really care that it does but everyone says their shit looks just as good as MHW's.

Looks great TJ, I recently did my tails with the same paint, still need to clear them though... Just not sure I am happy with the spray paint thing...

Well, I have always wanted (and still want) MHW smoked, but I really haven't been able to justify the price yet.

Your tails look 100000000000000000000000 times better now. I was wondering when you would get around to re-doing them. :P

lookin good.. ive been doing a little touching up this spring too. Painted front/rear valances, need to paint sides, door strips, and door handles. Got a few other projects too.

As for tails, ill be the first to say I dont think mine look like early MHWs. Id love to have a set too. These look fine enough for me though. Automotive quality clear. Not everyone has access to a paint gun though.

That's some nice stuff you finished. I grabbed some black armrests from the junkyard after having the paint chip. I hope you find better results.

I've got a much larger weekend project coming up. ;)

How long do you think the black on the door pulls and pockets is going to hold up? I have heard of people doing this but have never heard how it actually turns out.

I painted mine. Unfortunately, the passenger side map pocket is pretty damn scuffed. And, my driver's side is kinda. Door handles are holding up great.

The nice thing is all you have to do is remove and spray, and you're done touching them up. :D

                            Quesiton for EtaSport:

I want to make mine red. Could I use that Candy Apple Red paint, and then use an automotive clear coat? I'd also like to smoke my lights just a tad. So, could I red out the signal and smoke them, then use automotive clear coat? is that just any clear coat? I have access to a spray gun too...
