I've had both an 8lb flywheel on my E36 M42 and now a 14 lb flywheel M20 flywheel on my E30 M42. Both were a good upgrade over the 27~28lb flywheel, but the difference between the 14-16lb and the aluminum 8 lb isn't that noticable.

Oh come on. Any MAN would do a 8lb flywheel. Any MAN-GINA will do a 14lb flywheel. :)Originally posted by BimmerToadI've had both an 8lb flywheel on my E36 M42 and now a 14 lb flywheel M20 flywheel on my E30 M42. I had an Integra and a G20 as I've mentioned a couple times. They should have had good gas mileage. I usually got 19-21mpg around town with a decent amount of interstate travel. I just beat on it. You got to beat on it to get anywhere......Originally posted by Robmight want to research beyond the usual forum bullshit on that one bubbaOriginally posted by BS87My next E30 in a few years will probably be an M42 for gas milage alone.
I get about the same with M20 as I did my old four cylinders. And driving back the other night I realized I couldn't really live with / enjoy any less of a car. One of the reasons I don't want to go fuh raze on this and need a daily. Screw that. M20 daily.
And having to go 91 instead of 87 is a big difference in gas costs. I've found that 4.10 on a M20 unchipped feels good, with pretty decent gas mileage with 87 octane costs! And with a 3% shorter tire, it's lots of fun.
So really, think about what you really want? A fun to drive car with straight six feel, or a lighter more tossable car with a buzzy 4cyl?Comment

And any REAL MAN would do a grand-am spec 11lb assembly on an engine other than a M42 (unless it's fully built  )Originally posted by trentOh come on. Any MAN would do a 8lb flywheel. My bad...didn't realize you meant overall weight. I guess that wouldn't have mattered anyway because I didn't realize the cars were different in so many ways. Trunk tar? Good for Buffalo winters huh.- 2000 Audi S4 Stg 2 (sold)

I weighed my lightened flywheel the other day and it's 7.7kg (~16.9 lbs)..
It's a stock M40 single mass fly wheel lightened about 2 years ago but I didn't get to weigh it before it went back onto the car..
Not to sure what's the original weight, I believe it's about 9kg (~ 20lbs)
if we were to go on further on this subject, better start a new thread... ;)
EDIT:
From Brendan Purcell's website, the stock weight for the M40 flywheel is 9.973... So it's that's the actual figure, that would mean I actually shaved off 2.2kgs off the flywheel..... 8)BMWClub Malaysia

Well I just tried another 318is and I must say it handle much much better. Transmission was smooth and the engine responded much quicker. I'm definatly buying one.E30 325i 1990 (Winter beater)
