The mechanic said its just the "square rubber thing"? I really have no idea what a u joint does. I'm reading about it right now trying to get a better understanding. but 300 for the part labor and a new bolt somewhere down there?

This is confusing because the u-joint is neither serviceable or replaceable.

There is a center support bearing, which is a rubber/metal bearing right where the u-joint is. This is probably what he's talking about.

There is the guibo which goes from the driveshaft to the transmission.

Then there is the entire driveline.

I would personally replace the whole driveline... replacing just the center support bearing is often a crutch and it will fail again if the driveline u-joints themselves aren't operating smoothly. That's the key.

Unless you know what the "square rubber thing" is, it's hard to say.

Working around the drive line can be a huge pain. You need a lot of heavy machinery and very often you can't replace just the faulty part, instead you have to replace the whole assembly.

                    Machinery what???

I agree it's a pain, but on a lift it shouldn't be a big deal at all. I'd still assume the 300 dollar charge is ~100 for CSB and then ~200 for labor. Seems reasonable to me.

there doesn't exist a rubber piece in your driveline that is square.

And the cheapest place to get it done is your parent's garage, or your garage.
