I guess it depends how you have them set up but I've read that they only top out at 50mph? I know they're torquey as shit though...
They are very high geared. Great for off-road and ditch riding. Not so on roads. We used to have a first generation short wheel base Land Rover. It was painfull to reach a max of 45/50mph with the engine screaming.
The Pinzgauer, per exemple, has a smallish 2 litre Mercedes Benz engine.
I love 'em and would love to have one. There was a Pinzgauer that lived near where I worked while I was in Kansas City. I was spell-bound almost every day.

I wonder if there is a diff made with lower gears for road use because they made them as fire trucks as well. Hmmm
A poorman's way to go about having a badass truck - and the third vehicle I was considering along with the E30 - is the M35A2. About $3000 and you have a 6x6, 10 tire, military beast of a truck with a winch, huge towing capacity and just tons of cool.

The M35A2's are cool but not nearly as good looking as the Unimogs.
I went and looked at a 2002 parts car a while back and in their backyard was a Unimog. It was a father and son who were selling off their other planned projects to get that thing going. It was a friggin beast too, they had big plans for it including a cab replacement because there had been a fire at some point in it.
I got to drive my friends UniMog for a while at the NorthWest MogFest this year in Sheridan, OR. It was awesome! He actually lets quite a few people drive his Mog. My boyfriend rolled it onto it's side. They have a pretty good sized off-road track that we got to drive around in at MogFest.
