    Mazda 323 GTX

Recently spotted a 1988 Mazda 323 GTX on craigslist and it looks like a fun little car. Turbocharged 4-cylinder and all wheel drive. Wasn't very expensive.

With the amount of enthusiasts on this board I was hoping someone has possibly owned one or knows anythings about them. Do they have a lot of problems? What's the general verdict on them? I'm not really considering buying but I was curious for some info on them. Google searches don't turn up much.

    Thanks.

I'm old enough to remember the 323GTX coming out new. It was used for Mazda's Group A rally effort in Europe. In the states they sold some low number of like 800 GTX's across the whole country, they are very rare now.

Used to be the go-to rally car for low budget US rallying, until Subura started to put out their rally cars.

You see them concentrated in places like Vermont and Colorado.

theyre sweet little cars, i've driven quite a few. Parts are the biggest issue, especially trannys. I almost bought one a few months ago but opted for a 318is. check out www.rallyclassified.com, they are almost always on there- parts cars too.

EDIT: that site sucks now, i havent checked it in almost a year

i'd go for it. but i'll second that mazda transmissions (made by aisin) are not the most durable things in the world.

The gearboxes make early (89-99) Subaru 5-speeds look tough-as-nails.

323/Familiar gearboxes break if you look at them sternly.

I think it's the 2.2 turbo unit shared with the probe gt
                small t25 turbo, sohc 2.2..
It's an ok setup for a small car but I have no clue as to the awd unit..
                Could be fun...

                Nope I'm wrong. It's a 1.6L B6T Turbo 16-valve, 143 hp

I'd take this point of view: It was cheap, if you can find an extra tranny cheap great! If not fuck it! Buy it, destroy it........oh well.

Take the engine out and drop it in a Festiva.
