    Finally employed!

sweet, I just got hired as a summer intern at an actuarial company.

    shibby.

    start monday.

I'm relieved its business causal, with causual Fridays. I wore Jeans and sneakers today for the interview. And in the summer, we all get off at noon on Fridays.

nope. I realized I could never work retail ever. Or be able to be called off work if business is slow.

and I guess I get my own computer and phone too. and perhaps a cubicle. welcome to white corporate america yo.

"McCready and Keene, Inc. is an independent actuarial and employee benefits consulting firm that specializes in designing, installing and administering customized retirement plans."

"McCready and Keene was established in 1933 as McCready Pension Engineers, an actuarial consulting firm specializing in Defined Benefit plans. In order to provide a wider range of services to its growing client base, in 1975 the firm merged with Charles R. Keene & Associates, thereby becoming one of the largest independent actuarial and benefits consulting firms in the U.S. Today, McCready and Keene's staff includes nearly 100 actuaries, attorneys, paralegals, compliance specialists, retirement plan consultants and technology experts who manage more than 900 plans for close to half a million participants. Our combined client assets total more than $10 billion."

plus, how can I have worked at Cracker Barrel or GAP, when the president of the company saw my resume and wanted me right away?

my foot was in the door, well, because my mother is one of the actuaries, but the resume scored the job. I'm the first employee's son to work there who wasn't either the President or Chairman of the Board. People were getting annoyed by the fact, but I am opening the door for others later.

...I have NEVER worn jeans or sneakers to an interview. Even if it was a BS JOB, I wore business casual. I have been through many interviews to date too. Some dude who I work with interviewed in shorts and flip flops. Consider yourself lucky. What gives with the outfit though?

I wore jeans and sneakers to my GAP interview. That was appriopriate.

Wore a tie to my two bank interviews. And dress shoes I had to change after driving there.

I was told it was causal friday so I could in fact wear Jeans. They were nice clean ones, and a button down A&F shirt. I was fine.

networking gets them to look at your resume,
the resume gets you the interview / your skills, experience get you the job.

like i mentioned, it's not quite nepotism as I'm the FIRST non-president, non-chairmen offpsring to have an internship. And my mom's not got any extraordinary clout - she's just one of many actuaries. So I did need to impress them myself. True nepotism would have been the president's son working while he had a house arrest ankle-bracelet on.......

I feel sorry for the people who go through school getting a 4.0 but in the end can't get a job interview because they don't know anyone. I know a ton of people. I had an interview at a bank Thursday whose president was my former teacher's wife. It's who you know as much as what you know.

I hope you didn't just realize that now. It's definitely who you know that will get you somewhere....what you know is an added bonus.
