Get and 80's ford 4x4. Damn things are cheap as hell, run forever, and did I mention cheap? I got my 86 f150 4x4 windsor 302 with 180k and new 33" tires for 750. Its handled all the mud and snow I've thrown at it so far.

Its basically a Subaru, but you don't look like a hippy or a lesbian.
Btw +2 on the Toyota 4runner my parents have had theirs for almost 10 years now still running strong. It was also driven from Cali to Northeast Pa with 205k only changing the oil before leaving and another when he got there. Currently my dad is still driving it to the ground off-roading in the PA woods.sigpic(OO=[][]=OO)

ford and jeep are the best plus you can put a plow on them and make some money. ford exploer FTL. they are cheap and easy to fix. vw camper is nice but hard to come across and you can not take them across some bridges and into tunnels due to the tanks. older mpv awd is cheap but if you run into engine problems good luck finding an engine. astro van and toyota is a no go. toyota engines go far around $1,200 to $1,800 dollars. Astro van engines you will pay for also.
also if you really want to be happy. ZMBLUEDEVIL has a touring with no engine. buy M20 engine drop it in. NEED I SAY MORE BUT NOT AN AWD DRIVE BUT YOU WILL BE HAPPY. LOLLast edited by GT BMW E30; 01-01-2011, 09:47 AM.

Synchro's are the shit, but they are pricey for what they are, and they don't get around unless you put a Subaru engine in it. That XJ will be the last vehicle you will ever need for occasional off roading. Best balance of size, weight, and torque and basically indestructible.1985 M10b18. 70maybewhpoffury. Its not a 4X4, but its my camper. built on a Mercedes chassis with a carbed 4 cyl 2.4 ltr. gas motor. we restored it a few years back, its quite the head turner. use it for things like rock im park, and go a few times a year with the family. actually picked it up really cheap and have less than 3 grand in it total split between 3 families.
sometimes when we go into town to go bar hoping we bring it along, so we can crash there and not have to worry about how to get home!!!

dana 44 is good too. dana 35's have to be pampered.
The size of the engine isnt nearly as important as whats in the rear.
i want solid, reliable rear end and more importantly front and transfer case shit. basically. i want a 4wd that wont leave me stranded somewhere..
