I consistently beat those numbers with my 87 325. In the summer I get about 23avg (45/55 hwy street ac on) and in the winter, I get around 26-27 avg same conditions just no ac. check the sig link to see my fuel consumption and tracking since Feb of this year.
I saved 15% on my Bimmer parts by switching to ...
they're way off. The EPA changed how they test MPG on newer cars, and rather than retest every old car they simply took a correction factor and multiplied it by the old EPA rated MPG.
Not that I blame them for not retesting every old car, but the newer test is basically a lot more heavy load, AC on, etc. Basically the average douche american driver who tailgates like crazy on the freeway, constantly riding the brakes, and flooring it as soon as there's an opening until they have to slam on the brakes again and tailgate somebody else.
Gee I wonder why people's mileage was worse than the EPA old ratings (which I found to be a little conservative already, at least when my car was stock).
even heavily modified, getting worse economy in general than stock, I still get better than the new EPA rating.

I get way better than the old EPA window-sticker rating.
Who the hell gets 17 in the city with an M42? I think I'd get more than that in 1st gear.
you must sit idle at traffic lights a lot! I've never manged 16mpg with my 2.8 M20, except at a track when you're at WOT for basically 30 minutes straight..
um, i get 30 mpg avg with my M42. That's 11mpg off the EPA estimate. How do they come up with these numbers??? I couldn't possibly get 19 mpg for a tank of gas no matter how hard i tried. I get 30 mpg avg driving like an ass too. I could get 35 if i took it easy. I would have to be on a track to get 19 mpg.

I'm going to take a guess and say that my oxygen sensor needs some replacing and i'm running a tad rich. What are you averaging?
The city one sounds about right. I get 16mpg city in my 88 325is, but 27mpg highway with a very very light foot (never going over 65mph)
I also have an 88 325is, and when I compared my e30's fuel consumption to my buddy's 88 Mustang GT with auto and 5.0 v8, we had nearly identical consumption figures. Terrible stuff
