If you have to make this thread, ask yourself are you two really friends?

Seriously, just ask him to help/pay to fix the damage(s).

        Take it to insurance.

If he has a problem with that, then tell him he can buy you a new e30. Otherwise, he's not really a friend. He fucked up, he'll have to man up and take care of it now.

Oh yeah, and start paying attention.

I still don't get how a rear end collision cracked the oil pan.

I would guess his motor mounts were already toast and the shock from the accident caused the motor to smack into something.

Give you friend choices. Punch him in the face, sodomize him, or have him change the pan. No need to involve insurance for that.

How are the rear ending and the cracked pan related?
Brake harder. Go faster. No shit.

                If I was paying attention:
You have no rear damage on your car?
you knew that your car had suspect engine mounts?
The collision cracked the oil pan due to the whiplash allowed by poor engine mounts would be your argument?
I don't think you should chase your careless friend for compensation.
50/50 fault:) for oil pan involvement.
No rear damage plus good drive train mounts would be no oil pan/engine damage.

If you want $$ from your friend, you should have screamed, grabbed your neck and called insurance last week.

most airbag systems don't got off unless it's an impact where you'd need it. like... 20+mph.
Yeah, that's what I'm worried about. I'm not sure if my frame was damaged or not. We both agreed he was going 20+mph

I'm just trying to see the best way to do it, I'm not struggling with him about it, he knows he's at fault

                  this is what I'm thinking.
but no, I didn't know they were toast already. I've looked them over(while still on the car, though) and they looked fine.

There's no damage on my car, at least, from what I can see. You can see where the bumper shocks were pushed in a good half inch or better from some very light scratches where the bumper trim left marks.

I didn't know the engine mounts were bad(and still don't, they are stripped out now and I can't get them off), just the tranny.

Yes, some formof whiplash from the accident caused this. It really couldn't have happened from anything else.

How is this 50% my fault? I was rear ended when he wasn't paying attention.

                  It happened 2 mornings ago.

I mean, they are, but we need to factor in all the years, rust, etc...
all leads up to the compromising of the frame strength.

To check a motor mount's integrity, simply use a jack to raise the motor by a few inches and inspect each mount. Bad motor mounts are units that have somehow separated. Bad motor mounts will also over extend tranny mounts. Change as a set.

My car really doesn't have ANY rust, I've looked:) but yes, I agree, all the years have probably taken a toll.

I did this the first time I changed my oil pan, and there wasn't a problem. I couldn't see the metal inside it, as someone said on the first page that the metal and rubber seperate. I didn't know that before this. The rubber all the way around looks fine, not even dried out. Now, I can't get the motor mounts off.

                              Gotta love diving boards....LOL.

I cant believe nothing is wrong with your frame, or something else, if hit at 20mph in the rear.

well what I'm thinking is that if I DIDNT have diving boards, the plastic bumpers would've given and just cracked, instead of me having to replace my oil pan.
I'm not sure if anything is wrong with my frame or not.
