The only way to find the source of the problem is to check all the replies mentionned here. Including the dreaded snapped swaybar mounts. Which usually happens when a stiff swaybar is used in conjunction with soft springs.
Brake harder. Go faster. No shit.

Well, the clunk disappeared for a solid week. I then hit a good bump on the passenger rear and I heard a clunk and on the next 1-2 shift I heard it again. It is damn cold and impossible for me to get on the ground a try to diagnose this. But, does that sound like something that would more likely be subframe bushings or shock mounts?

            Either/or, afraid.

The only way you're going to figure it out is with a little diagnosis.

Or you could just replace everything back there anyway!

OK, I'll have to nurse this until the spring. With another 10 inches of fresh snow yesterday and cold temps, it just isn't going to happen right now. Thanks.

for what its worth my e28 shocks turn to shit at about 10 degrees. I mean they are never great (its a pos winter car) but they function properly when it warms up. Lower than 10 degrees or so its like they are totally blown and they clunk.
