LOS ANGELES -- Two people were killed Thursday in a crash at California Speedway in Fontana.

A private car club was renting the speedway at the time of the crash.
A Porsche Carrera GT crashed into a retaining wall and came to rest on the track's infield. Authorities said two people were in the vehicle at the time of the crash.
One person was pronounced dead at the scene.
The second person in the car was transported by Mercy Air to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center. That person later died.
The track is home to the California 500, Nextel Cup 500, the Toyota Indy 400 and other motorsport events. The 2-mile D-shaped oval surrounds an infield portion used for road courses and a 13-turn interior test circuit.
Private parties can rent the track to turn laps.

that really is terrible that people died in this sort of a lapping day situation, but its what happens where there's more car than the driver is capable of handling. It makes me feel good i can only reach 125 on the back straight at the track i'm starting to go to.... being a convertable couldn't have helped those guys either.PNW Crew

I have tears in my eyes as I write this. I witnessed the whole thing.
IT WAS NOT BEN'S FAULT!!! THE ORGANIZER HAD PICKED THE 150MPH ZONE AS THE ENTRANCE TO THE TRACK AND THE F-CAR DRIVER PULLED IN FRONT OF HIM NEAR THE END OF THE STRAGHT. THERE WERE NO CORNER WORKS AND NO FLAGS!!! HE TRIED TO AVOID HIM AND SPUN OUT AND HIT THE WALL AT NEARLY THAT SPEED.
The passenger died instantly on impact. Ben was airlifted to the hospital, but still had a pulse when they took him so PLEASE PRAY FOR HIM AND HIS FAMILY.Trevor Ely

In case people haven't figured it out yet, speed CAN and DOES kill! I know the quips that it isn't speed that kills but stupid drivers, but this is obviously proof of the former.
I must be getting old, but it just doesn't seem worth the ride. I understand that the driver leaves behind a wife and a child too.
Tragic. :(

dude, the cgt is one of the most overbuilt street cars ever. the reason they died was the same reason as dale, but not like rob said. in fact, the vector of earnhardt's crash was only ~60mph. but the fact that the chassis is so damn rigid, none of the force was absorbed. an overbuilt stiff chassis deflects most of the energy, and the only absorbable structures are the occupants. it's the same problem that nascar faced a few years back (and still does). open wheel cars are built better tho, they are built to fly apart which dissapates the energy. that's why a driver can leave a 150+ mph accident relatively unscathed in most professional open wheel cars today.sigpic
