BMW can do whatever they want in my book, so long as they stay away from the V6 in production vehicles...
BMW dumps the 6 for turbo 4's

BMW created the most silky smooth 6 cylnder motors in the late 1960s. That's 50 years of evolution. The M50 and N50 are great motors, but they are... long. The best way to make a car handle is to have the motor as short as possible and as far back as possible. Which is better with a four than a six. The word of the day in motors is efficiency. The turbo four might not be as smooth as the previous six, but I am sure it will have as much torque (if not more) and will be more efficient. BMW won the 1969 ETCC with a 2002Tik (turbo), then won the 1984 F1 championship with a turbo four. Did anyone forget about the e21 Flying Bricks with monster turbo motors? I have been longing for a very long time for the return of a turbo four. Thanks BMW.

A lot of modern turbo cars produce peak torque from near 1000rpm all the way to to 4000+. Its nothing new. It started with the old 1.8t vw engine and LPT volvo engines from the 90s. With VGT turbos and DI its only gotten better.

Huh. Guess I'm just used to looking at NA 4 cyl. peak torque specs in the 4000+ range. That and the 4 cyl. turbo cars I've owned seemed torque-less/gutless until 3000 or so. Regardless, that's a shitload of torque for a 4 pot. Me likes.Comment

Here is chart of the 2.0t engine that VW/Audi has been stuffing into just about everything for the last few years. BMW took the technology one step further with its new engine but its not really revolutionary. Just an evolution of existing technology.

Also they will keep the N55 turbo as the optional engine. They're just replacing the naturally aspirated inline 6.
